Farming is an important and central part of daily life at the Janmasthan. The community grows rice, turmeric, ragi and other vegetables and legumes mostly for their own needs. Farming is organic and only natural additives are used for fertilizer and pest control. Volunteers are invited to join the sowing and harvesting activities at various times during the agricultural cycles. This collective activity offers a way to engage neighbours from the village as well as well wishers from nearby town of Pen (Raigad district) and also from Pune city. While the farm land suffices for provisions of about six months the community still needs to buy some food from the market to make up for the rest of the year.
